Harry Bloy PADS the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society’s Bank Account
Burnaby – At an event today to announce the launch of the Pacific Assistance Dogs Society (PADS) Dogs With Jobs program and to celebrate the 18th graduating class of dogs and their handlers, Harry Bloy, MLA for Burquitlam announced the BC Government will provide PADS with a $75,000 Capital Project grant towards the construction of a wheelchair accessible dormitory.
“PADS is making a huge difference in providing a greater level of independence in the daily lives of people facing challenges through either a hearing or physical disability,” Bloy said. “I am very pleased my government has recognized the great work PADS performs for not only Burnaby but also our whole province. This $75,000 grant will enhance the services PADS provides.”
Once constructed, the fully wheelchair accessible client training dormitory will measure 880 square feet and provide temporary housing for those who are training with the dogs.
Last October, PADS received a $40,000 grant from the Vancouver Foundation, via the BC Government’s Disability Supports for Employment Fund to develop the Dogs With Jobs Program. The program allows PADS to work with new or existing clients and their assistance dogs to help find new opportunities. By paring dogs with jobs, PADS clients will be able to further their independence either through employment, school or volunteerism.
“It is important to ensure all people, regardless if they have a disability or not, are able to exercise independence. A disability should not be an obstacle for those who wish to live a full and productive life in our society,” Bloy added. “PADS provides a yeoman’s service for its clients and it is a privilege to be able to help them out.”
The $75,000 grant represents part of the government’s overall funding commitment to charities from bingo and lottery gaming revenues. For the 2004/05 fiscal year, approximately $133.5 million from gaming revenues was distributed to more than 6,000 organizations, including arts, culture and sport programs and school PACs. The Ministry of the Public Safety and the Solicitor General is responsible for the allocation of these Capital Project Grants.
