Quotes:

Burnaby North MLA Richard T. Lee:
“Groups like the Helping Families in Need Society provide invaluable services to families in our community, and gaming grants are very important to helping them succeed. Helping these groups is a cost-effective investment to strengthen Burnaby’s social fibre.”

Burnaby-Lougheed MLA Harry Bloy:
“I’m particularly pleased to see the Burnaby Fire Fighters Charitable Society on the list of Burnaby groups receiving gaming grants. This organization does so much for Burnaby - from donating tens of thousands of dollars to local hospitals to volunteering to teach CPR in schools and more. I am proud to call Burnaby firefighters true friends.”

Why this matters:

  • Across British Columbia, 196 recipients will share $3,710,901 in this latest round of grants from provincial gaming revenue.
  • All seven Burnaby organizations benefitting from this round are being awarded grants under the human and social services category.

Quick facts:

  • In 2010/11, government distributed a total of $135 million in gaming grants for eligible community programs and services.  The original budget called for $120 million, but in April 2011 Premier Christy Clark boosted funding by an extra $15 million.
  • About 6,000 community groups across B.C. benefited from these funds.
