| July 23, 2010 BURNABY – Burnaby residents will benefit from $1,080,152 in provincial traffic fine revenue sharing funding that will be put toward local public safety initiatives. The funding is part of a $38.6 million instalment from the Strategic Community Investment Fund. “Combating crime is having some major success in greatly improving the quality of life in Burnaby due in part to the province returning all traffic fine revenues back to the local community,” says Burnaby North MLA Richard T. Lee. “This investment provides significant support for the City of Burnaby to hire more police officers, create more public safety programs and continue to reduce crime rates.” “Effectively fighting crime involves strategically allocating resources at the frontlines in our local communities to keep our streets safe,” says Burnaby-Lougheed MLA Harry Bloy. “That’s why we have returned every penny of traffic fine revenue to Burnaby in making this a better place for all of us to work, live, and play.” The Strategic Community Investment Fund is a restructuring of provincial grants, consisting of the Traffic Fine Revenue Sharing program and Small Community and Regional District Grants. This payment of $38.6 million to B.C.’s communities is the third instalment of a total $227 million provided to local governments since 2009; a first instalment of $133 million was paid to communities in March 2009 and a second instalment of $55.5 million was paid in September 2009. Since 2001, the Province has given communities $413 million in traffic fine revenues and $363 million in Small Community and Regional District Grants.
