| July 29, 2010 BURNABY – Potential development of the Kamcon Construction site, vacant for two decades, can now proceed thanks to new provincial funding under the Brownfield Renewal Funding Program. “Burnaby has been experiencing a lot of positive growth and renewal over the past decade,” says Burnaby North MLA Richard T. Lee. “This funding is one more step in building a better community.” “The provincial government is working to clean up Burnaby’s neglected sites in order to provide new opportunities for redevelopment and growth in Burnaby,” says Burnaby-Lougheed MLA Harry Bloy. Funded for $83,347, the 0.13 hectare site, located in East Burnaby in the Edmonds neighbourhood, has been vacant for over 20 years and currently contains no structures or facilities. Development has not occurred on the site due to uncertainty over past activities and potential contamination. Due to its central location, future plans for the site include the development of mixed use residential incorporating green building technologies. The Province is making $800,000 available through the Brownfield Renewal Funding Program to stimulate land development and economic activity by encouraging remediation of brownfield sites. Brownfields are abandoned, vacant, derelict, or underutilized commercial and industrial properties, where past actions have resulted in actual or perceived contamination. These are sites that have great potential for redevelopment when the issue of contamination is addressed. In March 2007, the Province announced its Brownfield Renewal Strategy, which included the multi-million Brownfield Renewal Funding Program. In April 2010, the Province announced the third intake for the program and applicants were invited to apply by May 19, 2010. Last year the program approved 17 projects totalling over $1.6 million.
